The Elms Medical Centre Travel Advice

flight_and_luggageThe Practice Nurses will only be able to provide advice and vaccinations for standard travel and package tours for holidays up to a maximum of 3 weeks duration. For travel advice and vaccinations you will need to book an appointment at least 3 weeks before you travel.

We stock Hepatitis A, Thyphoid, Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio vaccinations free of charge for travellers.

Hepatitis B is available at a cost of £40 per injection (normally a course of 3 injections is recommended and must be paid for in advance)

We also provide basic malaria advice. If a prescription is required for malaria tablets there will be a charge of £13 for the prescription (this is not covered by the NHS). You will also need to pay the chemist for the cost of the malaria tablets as well as the prescription charge.

For rabies and yellow fever vaccinations, which are commonly recommended, you will need to attend one of the 'Travelled Well Clinics' listed below as the vaccinations are not available on the NHS and the surgery does not provide them.

If any of the following circumstances apply to you we recommend that you visit one of the travel clinics listed for more specialised advice and information. The circumstances are:

  • travelling at short notice
  • complex itineries to different countries
  • if you are pegnant or breast feeding
  • longer periods of travel
  • visits to relatives abroad
  • work experience abroad
  • pre-exisiting medical conditions

Please note that if you book with the Practice Nurse and any of the above apply then she will ask you to attend the the specialist travel clinic instead.
